In this workshop, I present how the BioSpiritual tradition stimulates the exploration of the spiritual dimension, in the field of Focusing. "The Body's Search for Spirit" explores the link between Focusing and Spirituality. There are specific learnable ways, a simple step by step approach into the wisdom of your body - the bridge connecting you with a sacred presence greater than yourself. The body has the ability to experience "felt meaning" as the link into the experience of Spirit. Focusing develops both mental and body availability to whatever's real inside you - the heart of healthy prayer. What's real in you is true, and therefore you're already living from it. This knowing place inside you can be physically felt. It's not a by-product of logic and reason, and can't be controlled or predicted. It opens you as a whole person to the possibility of inspiration and revelation. There is a transcendent or "graced" quality to the meaning in the body. Awareness of body meaning comes as a spontaneous gift and surprise. "The Body's Search for Spirit " Focusing opens the hidden door to this wisdom, the world of inner knowing and gift. BioSpiritual Focusing was developed by Fr. Edwin M.McMahon, Ph.D and Fr. Peter A. Campbell, Ph.D., (contact http://www.biospiritual.org) |
Within each of us, there is a natural organic resource, a body sense for the next step in life. Although sensed in many different ways by people through the ages, this resource is a largely uncultivated and under researched faculty of human nature. When you have subtle inspiration or great motivation to create something new, but can't seem to move forward with it; when you're troubled by tension and unresolved issues, with any issue, your body holds within it personal meanings for your next step. This bodily "felt sense" isn't just getting in touch with feelings. It's a special way of sensing mind/body/spirit unity, inwardly. By tapping into this source, you can discover the key to what isn't clear about your personal situation. Your body knows how you carry the whole of this situation, and how to move forward to the next creative step or resolution. If you can only discover how to be with its natural process, your body will open up doors to vast and boundless wisdom.
Focusing was named and developed by Dr. Eugene T. Gendlin, Ph.D. at the University of Chicago, out of a philosophical background as well as clinical and psychological research. (contact: http://www.focusing.org)
